DIY case foam?

Does anyone have any suggestions for DIY foam lining for a equipment case? To to be cut/molded to hold lights and other items? Also has anyone found and good cheap case alternatives to hold equipment such as lights or other stuff in?

these guys make utility cases with pre-perforated foam blocks. you just draw an outline around your geaar and tear out the foam along the outline. comes out in clean straight lines. they sell the foam blocks by themselves too. i don't think they sell direct to the public but lots of online dealers have them. i got mine at guitar center.
 
oh yeah. otherwise, you can buy large blocks of cushy foam at any fabric store. the best way to cut it is with an electric carving knife like you use to carve a turkey. goes thru foam like butter.
