DIY Carbon Fiber Jib

I caught this too - pretty intriguing - really like the portability aspect. Will definitely be giving this a try. Anyone else? Would be good to exchange sources/prices for parts. . . .

Oh that's interesting. He came and presented at our association meeting (bapva.com) and had that rig with him. He was really sensitive in anyone touching it, but while he wasn't looking I moved it around a little. ;-)

It was super light and according to him, really cheap to make. I don't think the electric motor mount was up to snuff though, it was very buggy and wires were hanging all over the place, just waiting to get disconnected and caught on stuff. The pan head would not move very smoothly, but it got the shot in the end!

A cool project would be to replicate the kessler style crane in CF.

That would require 3 CF beams, 2 aluminum platforms ( one for the camera and one for tripod, could be designed around off-the-shelf cheese plates), and a few cross bars. By using three beams the whole thing can be sturdier and safer with smaller diameter tubes.

I already began research into making one, Tbanucci, interesting to hear about your first hand experience. When you saw it, was it before he added the RC controls?

The links that are provided in the article seem to be a great starting place for pricing out everything. Servocity.com can provide the pan/tilt, Hi-Tech RC transmitter and receiver all at seemingly competitive prices.

The big investment is the CF tubes, around 1200-1300. My major concern is how much the tubes will flex with my HVX attached (in the article he uses a 1lb Samsung handheld HD camera)

I will try to post up some more links I have found when I am not at work for any who are interested.

He had the RC controls all set, that was the rickety part. The carbon fiber will hold a bigger cam, no problem, I'm not sure about the pan/tilt head though. Yes, he showed it off with the tiny handheld Samsung at the meeting, which actually gave a decent picture.
