DIY Camera Bag / Camera Case / Portabrace / Pelican Case

I remember in a college photography class, the professor said the worst thing you can carry your camera in is a camera bag, specifically a camera bag that says the brand of camera on it or that gives away the fact that you are carrying expensive equipment. She mentioned that a lot of people would stroll through the photography area looking for camera bags and would steal them and to never leave them in the classroom...and that you were better off carrying your camera in a paper bag.

Anyways that has always stuck with me and at this point in time I need a video camera bag or case. I've thought about getting a $150 used portabrace or pelican case. But for 1/3 the price figured maybe I can make my own.

Anyone ever tried doing this or know of any good tutorials online?

If you're really concerned with having your equipment stolen, then yes, a bag that doesn't scream "EXPENSIVE GEAR, STEAL ME!" would be better. But you've also got to protect your equipment, and I'd be skeptical about a DIY bag holding up as well or as long as a Petrol, PortaBrace, etc. (Unless of course you're a seasoned seamstress :-p)

I've had my backpack stolen once and it sucked, bad. Luckily I had my camera in hand while my bag was heisted, but they got away with everything else that was in it. Since then I've become VERY cautious about where my bag sits if I'm out shooting around town, it's gotta be within eyesight of where I'm shooting. And I don't trust my friends to look after it, when my bag was stolen they were supposed to keep an eye on it but walked away from it.

I have a Tamrac Expedition 8x for my DVX100a and Nikon D70s setup. The DVX just fits and there's plenty of extra space for other gear.
