DIY Butterfly

Hi DIY Folks,

I am not a great DIY guy, I even recruited others to put together my cine-dolly for me.

I am looking for alternative for a overhead/butterfly to filter the sun outside. I was thinking of making it out of PVC and drilling holes it it to put rope to hold it down. I was also thinking of using a sheet or something instead of buying a $200 silk.

Has anyone built something similar? I will post my results when its done.

Thanks.

How did you mount/hang them?
That's what "grips" are for

I just had people hold them, you could use spring loaded clamps or c-stands. One note of caution, outdoors on windy days they act like sails on a ship...hard to hold.

I am working on a modification that would add a stand to the existing frame. If I get it working I'll post a modification to the plans here.

I just searched through all 39 pages of Amvona's E-Bay store, but didn't see this on there at the moment ... but here's a link to the product from their retail site: http://www.amvona.com/v7/shop/?page=shop/flypage&view=1&product_id=2314

I've seen these go out the door for less than $150 through E-Bay, so if you don't want to DIY, I think you can still get a pretty good quality product for $150 or less, plus shipping. I've gotten a ton of stuff from them (through E-Bay), and typically pay no more than 25-30% of their retail pricing, and have been SUPER happy with the majority of their stuff.

Very cool, Norm. $150 would be good, on the link you gave it said $400+...my cheapie DIY version cost $35 :) But it's not as sturdy and needs people (grips) around to hold it.

Shower curtains and PVC how about? Shower curtains make great diffusion just so long as they don't get too hot and they are dirt cheap.

The "rip-stop nylon" or parachute material can be bought at most fabric stores. The piece needed for the plans attached above cost roughly $25 and seems unbothered by heat, wind, etc.

I've been wanting to make one of these forever, my dreams have finally come true! haha can't wait to make a trip to the hardware store.

nice link i, that will be useful in refining this design, great thread!! this will be very useful to so many dvxers

i agree, great thread. i've been wanting these things too, but didn't feel like paying a fortune for a glorified piece of cloth.

Thanks for the help!

>What do I have to buy to use this butterfly with c-stands? A grip head?

I'm sorry, which butterfly do you refer to?
