DIY Boom Pole

I made a boom pole the other day, so I thought I'd put up a quick little tutorial.

When fully extended does it bend at all? That looks like the paint pole that I was going to buy from lowes.

Nice job!

Yeah, it does bend some with my NTG-2 in the shock mount. It still seems sturdy, though, and I don't think it bends enough to cause concern.

You can also find them at Home Depot. I went yesterday. I saw one I really want to get. How did you get the shock mount on?

Click his link and read away.

Good job antiadam, if you spray paint it black I don't think anyone would ask any questions about it.

Excellent,
thats pretty snazzy looking, with some spary work it will look like something industry made,
thanks for the tutorial and good job

did you reinforce the joints?

Great work! The only thing was you left the pole itself off the materials list. In his $30 Film School book, Michael Dean talks about using a broom stick to great a boom pole, so I guess using a broom stick instead of a metal pole from Lowe's or Home Depot would work as well, eh? Although I'm an event videog, I'm having all sorts of ideas lately for shorts, so I'll likely be making one of these soon. Thanks for the info!

xilixfilms: I had a chance to put it to use last week, and it worked great. I didn't notice any handling noise.

faultygoblin: I didn't reinforce the joints, but with my mic it doesn't really seem to be putting too much stress on them.

mystico: Yeah, a broomstick would work fine for the pole, but the reason the lightbulb changer works so well is that you have the plastic attachments that screw onto it to attach your accessories to. The pole is included with the lightbulb changing kit, by the way.

Anyway, thanks all. I appreciate the feedback.

Ahhhh, well the included pole helps. Now I know I'll definitely be making one of these soon. Along with the $14 SteadiCam, this will be one of my summer projects.

mystico...

you haven't made the $14 stabilizer? that's one of the first things i put together...mine looks nothing like the original though. instead of the right angle for the handle i put in a 45 degree. to me it's more comfortable because at a right angle your arm sticks out and i've got shoulder problems. so being able to keep my arm at my side is more comfortable.
