DIY 4 Bank and Diva

the challenge: Build a 4 Bank and Diva Fluorescent light kit, using local stores Lowes, Home Depot etc.
Any Ideas, plans, shopping list?
get back to me guys!

ok heres my protype so far... and i havent mounted the ballasts yet and there is a protective film on the reflectors so they look yellow still.

I think i am going to make it look cooler later on but i first have to get it finished...

Wow - really nice job. Looks very clean and professional. My only issue would be having to cut zip ties for bulb replacement if you wanted to go Tungsten or Daylight but a few zip ties really isn't that big of a deal -

Care to share a parts / cost list?

cheno

wow, that looks pretty good.
the only thing i'd do differently is try to find something other than zip ties, like cheno said. but at the moment i'm not quite sure of what you could use to replace them...

care to share a ballpark figure of your expense in this?

awesome job.

yea.. i was trying to think of something besides zipties for the grids.. velcro sounds good, i think i my try that next. i just need like a velcro mounting thing.

as far as type of cardboard i used, it's accually kinda hard to find... I happed to live near a place that sells a bunch of werid materials like it
the material is called Coroplast and they only had an 8mm version in black. So it would have been nice to get 6mm.

I bought it because they said it can bend an infinite amount of times and not break.

I will post a Howto once i finish it, problay later this weekend!

oh and cost wise i spent more then i was expecting...
i think it was because i wanted it too be nice. I bought materials for 6 kinos and so the cost divided by 6 =

reflectors/ballasts/wires = $75
Grid = $5
copper wire with protection thing $3
zip ties: $ 1
zip tie mounts $1
Copper protetive tubes for zipties $1
base plate = 11
swivel clamp thing = 20ish

= 117ish?
however i bought the bulbs from kino flos to make sure they match whatever shoot i go on and thoes cost me another 85 dollars.

so total is 202 dollars... ai yah. i am broke now.

ok more posts soon

Well considering the next best thing is the 455 by Coollights at $459 it's not a bad investment.

Really nicely done.

I've worked with flex tube like you have on the outsife edge of your diva, but the stuff I've worked with doesnt really hold its shap when you bend it.

so how are you using it to keep the cardboard open and closed?

I'm guessing from his price breakdown description that he's using the version of electrical conduit that has a large diameter, solid copper ground wire in it. They'll have this on a back shelf somewhere at Home Depot in the contractors' area.

yep yep that exactly what it is.. not sure the name but copper thing inside.. holds pretty good so far!

oh and jason, I just got the thinest one i could find. oh and make sure it's one big copper wire inside, not like a bunch of tiny little ones wrapped up.

and ur also right about the AHS supply thing. the 2x55 watt things. and now that i think about it. they i spent like 140 on thoes things not 75 .. ok not very good at math ai yah. no wonder i am broke.

oh and i just temporary sodered the ballast on and wire and such. so it turns on! yay!

oh and i forgot to mention, the AHS reflectors are not as good as i hoped. They do indeed reflect a bunch but not all in a foward direction it's more of a flood light... so i am now going to have to buy thicker grids. not sure where to find that... quahhh

I thought the point of grids was to kill light not going straight? itsn't that why Kinoflos have black grids,

size wise I recall there grids being about 3/4ths of an inch.

so the fixtures are self ballasted? and you sodered them into one 110 plug? or you sodered the then into an external ballast?

ah thanks for the size, and yea ur right thats what i was trying to say but i problably didnt make much sense

and the bulbs are external ballasts and i mounted the ballasts on the fixture it self
