DIY $30 Shelf for Studio Monitor Speakers

For our Multimedia Lab at our college, I build a Speaker Shelf to hold
some very low priced "Studio Monitor Speakers". M-Audio budget price ones.

The design of the shelf could be expanded to fit other size speakers.

Dimensions:
7.25" x 48", adjustable height
Fits easily behind monitor on desk.

I wanted to get the speakers about 4 feet apart, and up off the desk.

I added the top 3/4in square aluminum to help hold the speakers, and so I could easily move
the speaker shelf to another station.

May paint it all black. The center support (actually an aluminum turnbuckle from Home Depot) is there to prevent
the shelf from sagging down, which always looks terrible.

Round rubber plumber washers form the legs. The green clip on the shelf, hold a copy of the receipt for warranty,
and the manual is hidden under shelf.

The speaker pads on the bottom, were from the Dollar Store, they are cheap knee pads.
Weatherstrip foam is placed at the top.

Speaker wire fit into a slot on bottom of shelf, it's completely hidden.

The shelf could hold a few things, behind the monitors.

Spent $3.00 on a secure lock cable, to prevent students from moving it to other areas of our facility.

The shelf is a solid wood "drawer slide" - got it for $2.95.

I'm thinking of painted it all black.

I'm pretty happy with this prototype design, was easy to build, all holes drilled are 3/8", very easy to assemble.

Comments/suggestion for improvements welcome.
Thanks

seems like a reasonable idea if you're in a situation where you NEED to move the speakers as a unit on a regular basis...
but for my purposes, it seems like a lof of rig just to achieve the same end result as a couple stacks of old books ; )

For a lab it would A, keep the speakers from walking out of the room, and B, keep them at the proper listening angle without students tweaking them.

keep the speakers from walking out of the room

yeah. i teach occasional classes at a local community college - THAT was my first thought. it aint a lock. but will certainly slow them down

Thanks for feedback..
Installed it two days ago, here it is in our lab.

It works and sounds great.

Note the green secure lock on right side.

Behind monitor is a good storage area on the shelf.
