DIY 15mm rods?

Thinking of buying some Carbon Fiber rods but I don't know the specs...anyone know what they are?

Rail - 15mm but the inside diameter...I'm guessing that would be 1.50cm

Rail Spacing - 60mm

Talking to a couple of suppliers.

Any help would be great.

if the rods are 15mm how can you have the internal diamtere 1.5cm ? 1.5cm = 15mm :)
The external diameter should be 15mm or 1.5cm and the spacing is 60mm or 6 cm.
You can use carbon, or aluminum tubes or aluminums bar (full).
Hope it helps.

Seems to be a subject that pops up every week now, it's not that hard to hit the search button. I'd recommend hollow for DSLR (simple setup) and solid for larger heavier setups. Yes 15mm is the OD (outside diameter) and if you're going hollow, you want at least a .080" wall thickness. 60mm spacing has nothing to do with the rod design. The 60mm (centers) spacing is how far both rods need to be separated from each other to fit a support system adjustment mount.

Hope that helps

I like the extra weight/cost of solid aluminum. It is hardly heavy. A rig that is too light seems unstable to me. Personal choice I guess.

Balance...Now that is critical if you are doing a shoulder rig.

I thought we were talking about CF not aluminum. AL vs CF as far as weight, not really a big concern of mine especially with a DSLR setup. However larger setups say 25" rods, then you're talking weight. I would rather have the option to place weight where it's needed and not have to add on top of or shift later. Yes it's personal preference and have used CF, AL, and SS. All work great and for some people that don't have the extra little weights for a CF rig, AL or SS will kind of help in that situation.

Don't get me wrong I love machining 6061 AL, but for camera rods I'd suggested a higher tensile & yield strength or to have them anodized. Anodizing type II or III does help out a bit, but also increases the size of the part if tolerances are an issue. Again it depends on how far you want to go.

You know you can make your own CF rods with a few sheets of CF, impression rod (14.5mm or 14.7mm) and resin right ? I've seen a bunch of people doing so to bring cost down, but haven't tried it yet, I hire out for my rods mainly due to high tolerance.
