DiY 1/4 screws

There might be a very simple/obvious answer to this but how do you guys make a screw suitable for camera use from a normal 1/4 screw. What I mean by that is how do you strip the rest of threads to only leave the 2 or 3 necessary threads on the bolt?

It is simple

This Screws will be produced on a Lathe. First the complete thread is cut, then the rest of it cut with a rotary knife away. Last Year I make some Screws on my lathe, thats a picture of them.

Nice. Did you cut the slot on a mill and if so, how did you hold the piece to cut it?

The BSW/Whitworth/Imperial thread screws are virtually impossible to find in the UK (although it's supposed to be a British standard). Major shops don't stock them anymore, only Metric threads these days.
You can still get them everywhere in the US so I brought a whole bag back from my last holiday.

Since I don't happen to have a Lathe in my spare room ;) I'll probably have to get some off ebay...

I am sorry, but the standard for Screws in the Cine Tech is still the UNC (American) thread, not the BSW or the Whithworththread......

BSW, Whitworth and UNC are the same up to 1/2". I cut the base thread off (the bit that goes through the plate) by sticking the thread part I want to keep into a drill, turning the drill on and holding a file against the threads.

At least a picture of my Mc Gyver Cameraman survival kit

You really should sell these Plexxart.
Can I PM you for a set?

:)

Thank you for the question, but I will not sell these screws. This was a Christmas gift from me for my best customers. What I produced for this customers you will find it in the signature link.
The problem is also, that the screw is made by cutting steel and the are starting to rust after a time. You will have with the screws in the long run no joy.

Finally, I present here an image of a technical drawing, where the dimensions of the screws are shown. Maybe it's helpful for one or the other........
