Disturbia

Most of you are going to write this one off as a Rear Window rip-off. And guess what? YOU'RE RIGHT! However, blasphemy is about to committed. I would recommend to any 20 year old and younger who has never seen Rear Window, to watch this film over the original. Because this film is really good. And you won't have to suspend disbelief with the since-dead actors, the old time feel, and the play-like staging. This is an updated version of that and it actually works. From the cool-as-hell opening to the slow but convincing well-paced build up, this movie works. My only critique of the film is that it's a little light around the edges at times. It falls back on the romance in areas where it could've been a lot darker. But my guess is that that wasn't the directors choice. It might have been someone at the studio who really really wanted that PG-13.

I will say that while I guess Shia LaBeouf is the next big thing, whether we like it or not, there is something about him I don't like. What kills me is that I have no idea what it is. He's not a bad actor. He's definitely a good actor. I think it's that he has these little twitches he falls back on with his face that bother me. Who knows. Or maybe it's that he's so NOT a great actor, that I don't know why he's getting all these rolls. For you to be the next big thing, you have to be undoubtedly great, and he's not.

Oh, SPOILERS BELOW. I have a theory on where all those Shia in Indiana Jones casting rumors started. In the film, there's a moment where Shia falls into a murky ditch and all these skeletons start falling onto him. I seem to remember a very similar scene in the Indiana Jones movies. And I can see someone asking him, after they'd seen the movie, if he'd ever like to be in an Indiana Jones movie. And he said yes. And there you have the beginnings of an internet rumor.

But that's besides the point. The point is, this movie rocked! And I recommend it.

The movie was ****ing sweet, just like the lookout... I like this youth in trouble type writing.... I enjoyed both films.

I liked that they took rear window and updated with this new concept.... done very well.

Anyone who had morals would refuse to make this film. I can only see a remake justified if they do it better than the original, but we're talking REAR WINDOW here. This is prime Hitchcock. Man i cant wait for the Taxi Driver remake in 20 years...

When you think about it, everything's already been done. Cliches are okay as long as you make a good film, which they did here.

And people forget that the reason cliches are cliches (used over and over again) is because they work.

also phil maker hate ever movie on earth. anyway back to the point its a good update at least they didnt call it rear window... and they actually breath life into it... plus the characters and the acting was was it was believable its hard to find good teen actors who sound and act like teens and i think they did it.... I loved it and had fun and come on people quit cryinf so much at least it's not dog ****.

2009 will see the remake of The Birds :undecided

I hate remakes. And trying to take on a hitchcock film is even worse. Psycho was dissapointing (even though I am a Vince Vaughn fan), Rear Window was kind of groudbreaking for its time (I hardly think disturbia is going to set any new trends).

I think the only remake that was actually better than the original was The Fly. I'll take Jimmy Stewart over Shia LaBeouf any day of the week. Although casting David Morse as the bad guy is a good move.

Boom Mic!!

I'm surprised nobody has talked about the visible boom mic in two scenes!
I know DJ Caruso has been around, made a few flicks but he should have picked this up but I'm sure for whatever reason it was left in?
When the Spanish teacher walks over to Shia you can clearly see the Boom come down.. then at the court scene when the judge gives the sentencing, the boom is right over the judges head.. very annoying..its worth the price of admission just to see the boom mic..

The movie itself.. I did enjoy it. It was just a straight forward story, what did you expect for a PG movie? (PG in Canada, I think its PG13 in the US?) The two leads had great chemistry and that's what did it for me..

Cheers
Strauss

That boom mic thing was such a big issue that the distributors had to send out warnings to projectionists.

I'm usually really good at catching those things but I didn't see the boom in either of those scenes. I think there's something to be said about us just assuming that these professional productions won't screw up. But I guess they do.

Darnit, now I have to rent it when it comes out on DVD... just so I can see a stupid boom mic. What has my life become?

i never saw it... i read it was a cropping issue that could be solve... the worse boom mic issue i had was when i saw the ring in theaters. you could see it duiring the interegation scene swing to each perosn talking... typicaly it can be solve but it dpends on the projectionist. lots of film prints have boom mics in them its just how good is your projectionist at lining up the scene.

Hmmmm. I wonder if you'd have been so positive about remaking this if the original had been an Asian movie? I seem to remember you railing against The Departed for the same reasons you're liking Disturbia...

hahah look what happens when somebody tries to remake Rear Window!! It's tearing us apart!
I dont think most people really appreciate how brilliant Rear Window really was, if they did, they'd rather die than condone such cinematic blasphemy. there i said it.

Even though I hate the concept of remaking films, it's a reality of the world we live in. So I've just accepted it. I've been able to appreciate a lot more movies because of this.
