Dismantling Briteks?

I'd like to guage everyone's opinion on removing the glass in front of the Britek fixtures. Whenever I have to change a bulb, it's a real pain in the ass to take out those little screws everytime. Omni's and other open-face lights don't have any glass in front so I'm thinking it wouldn't be too dangerous. Although one time we had an Omni set up in our office and the bulb heated up so much that the globe (which was glowing orange) shot off the base, through the softbox and eggcrate and proceeded to burn a hole in the carpet. Anybody done this?

Just rcvd two new briteks today....was just wondering how you put the bulb in.

edit: Think I'll leave the glass in place....keeps wandering fingers away from the bulb.

You gotta put it right in through the front...which is why I don't like that glass being there. I dunno, seems like it'd be ok to take it out. I guess people are quietly disagreeing:embarasse

Keep the glass there -- it's probably some sort of UV shielding. Plus it protects against a shattering bulb spraying hot shards of glass all over your actors & actresses.

UV Shielding? Interesting. Hadn't even thought of that. Thanks for the authoritative word Barry:) The glass shall stay.

yeah I definately recommend leaving the glass on. I recently had a bulb explode in my Britek. The glass saved me being shattered with glass.

If you're concerned about time spent changing globes in the field - you could replace the phillips head screws with thumb screws. The glass is far enough back it shouldn't interfere with softboxes etc. Might make things a little faster.

What? It's only 3 screws. Takes me like 30 seconds. The glass is there for a reason too

You just take out the 3 screws, pop the old bulb out, pop the new one in , then put back the screws... seems easy to me..:undecided

They are shipped with a wire screen over the fixture which snaps off and on... but most people remove them and leave them off....hence the danger.
