Disk Warrior for macs

Anyone know how to use it?

EDIT:

I got it to run but it's not seeing the messed up drive.

When I go t Disk Utilities, it's sees the drive but doesn't give me any options.

Looks like the mac sees the drive (in Disk Utilities) even though it's not mounted but Disk Warrior doesn't pick it up.

Any advice?

From my understanding and from past experience, you Boot from the Disk Warrior disk.

So Restart with the disc in the dvd/cd-r drive and hold down the C key while restarting and your Mac should start up from the Disk Warrior disk.

Once booted up use Disk Warrior.

I haven't used Disk Warrior in a while because to be quite frank, it didn't do much for me. It works well as a preventetive app. Meaning, installing it before your drive has anything even on it, before it dies, after reformatting.

With the version I have (v.3), you can't rebuild the start-up drive from a copy of Disk Warrior on that drive, but you can use it to rebuilt your other drives. To rebuild your start-up drive, ian lucero is right--you have to boot from the CD or some other HD other than your usual start-up drive.

you should get them to send the cd for future use as it is bootable if you ever have a problem with your start drive.

for your purposes in this instance:
you install the program and run it from the disk that is working .
you select the problem disk from the pulldown menu and click rebuild.
watch it get to like stage 5 or 6 in 10 minutes.
go away for a few hours.
check it before you go to bed.
check again in the morning. hopefully it will have finished and generated a report.

lol, thanks JY.... I just PMed you about this.... good timing dude..

They let me download the program for instant use but it'll take 3-4 weeks before I get the CD.

How to get it to see the messed up drive?

when I go to Disk Utility in the mac it shows the drive is there but when I run Disk Warrior it doesn't see the drive at all.

Do you have any suggestions?

You should be able to make a bootable CD with Disk Warrior on there. When you downloaded Disk Warrior, did it come as a .dmg ? To put it on to a CD open up that Disk Warrior .dmg file and open up Disk Utilities and then select the Disk Warrior disk and then (press Apple + B) to burn it. A window will open up and you just plop a blank cd-r in there and burn it. Then you should be able to boot off that CD.

Ok, I edited the original post...

Thanks ian... I got it to run but my next challenge is to get Disk Warrior to see the messed up drive.

Do you think booting to a bootable CD with disk warrior on it will make a difference?

Here's what I mean when I say that the mac sees the drive in Disk Utilities but doesn't give me any useable options:

Do you still have the messed up drive as an external dirve? This shouldn't matter but is it at all possible to get it installed internally in a tower? I just don't trust firewire/usb when a drive is messed up. Having it hooked up to the computer via its real interface (usually ATA or SATA) will illiminate any worries of a faulty firewire/usb bridge being the culprit of anything.

If this is not possible then try the Booting off the Disk Warrior disk and see if it does recognize the messed up drive via firewire. I wouldn't rule out the external case (if that's what your set-up is) being the cause of this. I had a External Western Digital firewire brand drive way back or at least the Drive was Western Digital, and somehow the drive failed and was able to save it by taking out of its cheapo firewire case and Disk Warrior-ing back to life after installing it internally. Of course I had Disk Warrior do all the scanning and rebulding before it failed, so DW knew what to look for. It seemed like magic.

That's not to say it won't work for you.

Ok, I made the bootable CD like u said and rebooted all while holding down th "C" button. Is that how u boot to a cd? lol, I'm so new to macs. I'm starting to wish I went with a pc as I'm fluent in them, hell I'm an MCSE for christ sake.

Anyway, it didn't work but it did show the messed up drive in disk utilities as now being a 1.5TB drive. LOL

Ok UPDATE again, I did the old turn the drive on and off a few times and what do ya know! IT SHOWED UP!

So I really quick went into disk warrior and it also saw the drive. I started the rebuild and it's in that process now.

WISH ME LUCK! LOL

Also, if this does or doesn't workout I want to thank you guys for your time, help and patience.

It looks like you aren't in the Disk Warrior app?

When you restarted did you hold down the C key until the Apple came up on the screen?

OH WAIT!

I just saw your new post. Disregard. Good Luck!

Disk Warrior r0x. Sadly, I always have to cut off my G-Raids and cut them back on after a while. Something is off with the OS X interface when dealing with them.

Thanks for all the great info, Jay. I'm following this thread closely for future reference. If Disk Warrior works for you I'll probably get it to keep for that dreaded day when I need it.

what I learned from my experience is something that is best learned through advice, not firsthand- have a backup routine. once a week, once a month, whatever.

Even though I did not have a backup, I was able to save all of my data, but:

--man did it suck
--it took forever

and i would have been a lot less freaked out if I had known that i at least had backed up in the previous month. sure, it costs like $200-$300 to get a large extra external drive, but when it takes a week to fix and head of gray hair, well it was a couple hundred well spent.
