Disk speeds?

Setting up Vegas 8.0/XP desktop system and want to know what everyone thought about necessary disk speed, ie. for my main video data drive(s), what is the minimun I can get away with....USB1.0, USB2.0, 1394a, 1394b, Sata, or eSata ? Looking for 1.0TB storage for interior AND external purposes.

Shooting with a P2 HVX200, 720pn.

ALSO if anyone knows of a quick/small disk speek program out there to measure speed. I used to use the Canopus one, worked great....

Thanks in advance.....

You should be fine with USB 2.0 speeds but for dependability use Firewire... Firewire 400 is just as fast as USB 2.0's maximum speed but constant. Sata are the best way to go if you have an option.

Make sure the drives are 7200.10 if you have an option. Those are faster and safer than the normal 7200 drives.

If you are going to get a RAID enclosure then the RAID controller can play a big role especially if using the faster drives.

It doesn't sound like you are but if you are installing internal drives then the South Bridge in your Motherboard which act as the RAID controller will also play a big role, especially since you would definitely be getting the 7200.10 drives.

However, so long as you get something with decent speeds then disk speed is unlikely going to be the bottleneck with Vegas.

Try HDtach which and look for your average read speed.

7200.10 drives typically offer about 60MB/s average or slightly more.

Hdtach is a free download ??? Any link to where you can download this ? Also doesnt nero surning software come with a complete disk diagnostic tool. DIRVE SPEED or something is what they call it if im right ? How is this different from that. Also i have a major question to pool in....How does one identify a SATA or SATA 2 or the rpm speed. The rpm speed is never menioned on the disk sticker. Is there a way to find out from system bios / some other method ?
