Disjecta, once again a question for you?

Steven,

Have you given any more thought to teaching a cinematography course using the DVX?

Looking to start doing my own DP work again. Which I haven't done in a long time. But now days to get things done you have to pull a Robert Rodriguez.

So just wondering once again have you given it much thought?

Gary

Gary,

I'm flattered that you would ask but the truth is, I don't think I'm really qualified to actually "teach" this stuff. I follow my gut most of the time and have a healthy technical awareness of my equipment.

Logistically, also, I'm not sure how it could happen but I certainly appreciate the thought.

your stuff is gorgeous and you have quite an eye. looking forward to your next piece.

I was just taking my nieces and they're dog for a walk in the woods behind my house. My youngest niece pointed out that the two geese that look in the pond have babies according to her words.

Sure enough four baby geese. So I'll have to take the camera down and get some shots. Personally I think your qualified. I could care less about degrees.

So maybe sleep on it for a few days.

Man, I was just about to ask about Disjecta, cause it has been ages since I have seen him posting any messages to the forum.

So there you are. Have you been very busy?

Good to hear from you again.

All the best :D

Fidel.

Do you need an apprentice? I live in Portland, which isn't all that far from Seattle. Are you shooting/have you ever shot anything in Oregon?

Disjecta,

To follow up on Gary's initial question ... you are more than qualified to teach this course! In fact, why not start off with a DVX Cinematography seminar and expand further from that point. Perhaps Barry Green could also join with you in leading this seminar. I live in Maryland and would be thrilled to attend ASAP. I know many others would love to participate in this offering.

The logistics should be fairly straightforward. Once you've structured the course, time and place, come up with a seminar price tag. We pay our own travel and lodging (unless you'd like to put us up in your serenely beautiful habitat).

The opportunity to learn from you - one of this site's most knowledgable and respected teachers - is a great privilege and worth every penny of the expense you deem fit. Please do find a way to make this possible.

Well, I'm so honored by your collective responses. Why don't we organize a casual shoot over a weekend instead of making it a seminar which is more than I can handle right now.

Basically, who ever is interested, could come to the Seattle area, arrange for their own transport and accomodation and meet me for a shoot Saturday and Sunday of a pre-determined weekend...

We could do 12-6 on Saturday in and around Pine Lake and then, on Sunday, do 9-3 at Marymoor park (see my Web site for a previous shoot)...

Basically, it would be shooting in the field for fun and I could talk everyone through what I do and what I look for, etc. This would also be a great environment for just casual chat.

So, right now I'm looking at maybe the 2nd weekend in June as a possibility.

Let me know if you are interested via PM or in this thread....

Disjecta,

In all seriousness, I was just talking with a friend yesterday about trying to coordinate a DV DP/Cinematography/lighting workshop here in Seattle (where I live), as I'm spending all day long reading these forums and about a dozen other books, and really need to get some practical hands on experience/training (yes, I do actually try shooting and lighting myself, but I've had the camera all of 6 weeks, but I did get what I thought was some nice light right here in my apartment last night using existing lights (tungsten, christmas lights, and a fluorescent hidden behind the couch and draped with a peach colored table cloth!)

So, Disjecta, anything I can do to assist in such an endeavor, just say the word as I'm officially on an 18 month work sabbatical (hoping to never go back)!

I'm also trying to plan a lighting kit purchase, somewhere in the 1,500-2,000 range (again, reading bazillions of posts, and articles, and books)

Disjecta,

I just sent you a PM and I'm all set for the 2nd weekend in June!

Einstien once said " It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."

Here's to our great awakening, Mr. Teacher.

Lights! Camera! Pinke Lake and Marymoor Park!

oh what it would mean to be part of the contiguous states. Trust me guys, take advantage of the opportunity if theres something cool where you are. Up here, nothing video related goes on very often and I'm left with dvxuser.com to make up for it.

Nothing beats hands on learning. nothing.

Reading this I immediately thought of 911Media, and the possiblity of Disjecta teaching there. But you sound busy. I like the sound of the June thing but I'll be out of town. For those of you looking for low-cost classes using the kind of gear most of us would be using, consider 911media.org - a local (seattle) non-profit involved in media arts. They have many classes in Lighting, Cinematography, Sound for Digital Video, Editing, and much more.

Actually, I'm in the middle of a 911media class right now on 'Documentary Filmmaking', it has its strengths and weaknesses, but admittedly they have a great selection of courses. This is actually what I was proposing coordinating in my first post. Like minds ;-)

DOH! That's the one weekend I'm busy. (My wife has a recital.) I'll be interested to hear how the weekend goes for you guys ...

Okay, June 11th and 12th are the dates I'm proposing. It's an open invitation because of the casual nature of the thing (meaning, anyone can decide to come up to the dates proposed. All you need to do is PM me) so I'm thinking 12-6 on Saturday and 9-3 on Sunday.

Those interested can PM me for details.

Thanks guys, I hope it's worth your while :)

Well, perhaps the last two days of SIFF aren't that important, there were two films I was going to go see, but as much as I love and appreciate watching films, I'd prefer to MAKE them, so, I'll work with 6/11 & 6/12 dates! ;-)

Thanks very much for your time and effort on this open invitation. June 11th and 12th sound great ... I'm making travel and lodging arrangements now.

Any suggestions on how best to prepare over the next few weeks in order to optimize our learning with you?

Also, I did PM you for any details you care to share ... not sure if you got that message.
