Discovery Channel Wants to License My Footage

Thought Equity Motion is good, don't waste your time selling clips for nothing on the other sites. Getty is awesome, they sell a shitload of footage worldwide but they take 2/3rds of the money. There are lots of sites, use them all, set your own prices. Google is your friend.

I contacted them. They got back to me. We're going to have a telephone conversation Thursday.

Still no word from Pilgrim. But it's good.. that was the impetus to go on this mission of discovery of opportunity.

I just finished speaking with someone in sales from ThoughtEquity.

Basically, they take 80-50% of the sale, depending on how much work and volume the provider of footage does.

My type of footage for this event typically sells for $500-2000 per license. Often, shows like those on Discovery, buy by the second, usually about $50/second, so they may buy six seconds of something for $300.

It was recommended that I don't sell the footage outright, but license it. Every few years, interest comes around for this kind of shot, so every few years, I would make a few thousand in sales. They would sell it as offline footage, not priced, but negotiated per sale. I think this may be the most sensible approach. On one hand, it would be difficult to turn down a lump payment of $30K for exclusives, and being I don't know how much longer I'll be alive, I don't know if I'm better off having that money now, or have a smaller, but more continuous income later. But the idea of TI's 150 or so field sales reps out there promoting my clip can sure make the long-term approach seem attractive.

So the next step is to send them a screener and we'll see where it goes from there.
