Rosco makes a lens cleaner that is used on cameras costing several hundreds of thousands of dollars (Panavision, Arriflex, etc.). I would surmise that it might work just fine on a DVX with either microfiber or the cleaning paper. Do not use Kleenex or Q-tips.
There is an excellent "white paper" on lens cleaning in the FAQ section of the Century Optics website, www.centuryoptics.com, click on info, then on FAQ, then question 14, "How do I clean my lens?"
There is certainly more than one way to safely clean a lens, but caution is the key, as John Hudson points out, the coatings on the lens are susceptable to damage because they are softer than the glass.
Blow or brush off (using a clean, unused -for painting- ) camels hair brush to remove as much dirt and grit as possible before using cleaning materials.
hey bill, that's cool and all but i don't have a camels hair brush and my lens was dirty and i was at the circus so i just went over to one of the camels and shoved my lens in its hide and wiped it all over. it was going well until the camel kicked me in the knee and i dropped the camera in a pile of camel dung, which got on the lens. i couldn't wipe the camera on the camel again because it ran off and also i had a compound fracture in my leg so i wasn't going anywhere too soon. so i scraped the camel dung off the lens with a rock. it looks pretty clean now, but i'm thinking i should get one of those paintbrushes.
to my comment about using a Camel's hair paint brush to remove loose dirt prior to using tissue or a micro-fiber cloth Barry responded:

Barry: there are times when everyday seems like a circus, but you and Jarred are excellent Ringmasters, but the clown act needs work.
Seriously we at the Century Division of Schneider have been aware for some time of the need for a specialized product for removing camel dung and other similar substances from lenses- since getting in deep do do is so common place.
The first batch is almost ready for testing and I will have a sample sent to you for evaluation. It will be marketed as Super Schneider HIgh Tech Cleaner for Lenses (super S.HI.T. cleaner for short).
The guys in R&D claim it makes an excellent after shave as well.
I look forward to seeing your review in this forum.
In a pinch tho your techique should work as long as you use a clean rock.
Hama build a Pen like tool that is specialy made to clean the flourite lenses like the one on the dvx. On one end the Pen carries a build in brush. If you pull the little handle at the side the brush disapears inside and is well protected. At the other end is a little flexible device you use to remove fingerprints and what else is there on your lens. It works really well.
its called LENSPEN.
yes, i have a lens pen, i heard about them a long time ago but never knew where to get it and a few weeks ago i walked into an EMS store (it is an outdoor store Eastern Mountain Sports) not sure if they are nationwide.
best thing about the lens pen is that it is awfully compact and damn convenient to tote around in a camera bag!
