Dirt cheap FX software

This product has been mentioned here tons but I thought with the Sci-Fi fest I might re post for some of the newer members.

Formally AlamDv, Effects Lab is a very inexpensive but effective stand alone effects software - About $120. Good for muzzle flashes, particle effects, fire, smoke and explosions, etc.

If you don't have the budget for high end software this is worth a look:

There's a whole forum of people using this software.

fxhome.com/community

They all use the FXhome products. AlamDV, Chromonantor, etc.

I haven't used it, but I've seen a LOT of people turn out effects with the programs. I'm assuming that the more attentive and skilled producer could do quick damage with it.

Sorry, mis-information--

The product has changed yet AGAIN
Now it's CompositeLAB.

They change the damned name ALL the time. Sheesh.

But I think it's supposed to be decent software. Even better, the under one-fifty price tag.

I use EffectsLab Pro and its a wonderful; best money ever spent! The muzzle flash engine is dead easy and a joy to use, stuff like bullet trails is really easy too! :)

Its ok for low budget buddy stuff. AlamDV used to be cheapo. composite lab is a huge leap ahead but aeons away from digital fusion 5.
If you want good amateur weekend projects go ahead, if you are after a pro look go for DF5. - combustion or AE in second place.
If you're only interedted in muzzles flashes and laser swords, CompLab is enough!

I use it all the time. Did some muzzle flashes and lightsaber effects for a film I made about 4 monthes ago.

Great stuff for an awesome price!

That's probably the case.

Digital Fusion 5 -- Is this a user-friendly program?

I've still got AlamDV2 and I've used it a couple of times just recently. Works great and I would definitely add their new software to my toolbox even if I had higher-end stuff, the program is just so simple to use!:)

I would deep six this shlt. I downloaded it and it's ridiculous. Unless you don't want to be bothered with After Effects and it's learning curve then go for it. I guess to it does have an easy effect for gun fire. Ya what the hell...rock on with this program and let's see some results!:)

Some of the presets on the FXHome site looks good... I saw a video of a window burning with particles... and it looked amazing... it would work great to show a bulding get blown up and green screen somebody that excapes standing up and looking back showing the roof, windows, doorway, on fire with particles coming down and smoke...

I've seen some big budget films with fakish/cartoonish/very fake looking effects... At the end of Saw when he gets his throat sliced, In Kill Bill Vol. 1 when the chineese girl bleeds blood from her eyes... Hostel, when the guy cuts the girls eye out and the yellow blood poors out... That looks so digital/fake... But it's cool because ... for some reason (which I can't explain) I personally like the fakish digital look... Anybody agree?

Its very amateurish i have to say... good for fun kiddie stuff but not for a serious project
Digital Fusion is EXTREMELY hardcore to learn, but the BEST of the BEST
