does the director get advance money in a two-picture deal? or is the deal basically that he just gets to or has to direct two films with that particular studio?

I believe it means that he has to direct two films for that particular studio. Of corse how and when is defined in the contract sometimes it's the next too pictures he makes has to be with them or the contract could say he has to make two films for them within the next 4 years.
