Director you're most influenced by...

Okay, so we have a thread for actors we'd all like to work with. What about directors? Who would you like to work under? Why? Or who has influenced your filmmaking style the greatest? Who do you draw your biggest inspiration from, in terms of directing style?

my influence is Tarantino. i absolutley love his work. i'm modeling most of my scripts after his style. emphasis on dialogue and some action as well. i'd like to work with him or spielberg or lucas as well

Takeshi Kitano - The definition of cool. One second he has you on the floor laughing. The next, your jaw drops in fascination of the abstract carnage unfolding before your eyes. The quiet before the storm. Brutal. The greatest arthouse action auteur you'll ever be likely to find.

See: Sonatine, FireWorks, Violent Cop*

Wong Kar Wai - Kinetic. Beautiful. Haunting. Fate. Chance. One moment. The one that got away. No script, no problem.International. Independent. Art house. Drink it up.

See: Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, Happy Tohether*

Takashi Miike - 14 years...65 films. Bullets and breasts. Be afraid. Burlap bag. Piano wire. Here it comes. There she goes. Ouch.

See: Dead or Alive, Audition*, Ichi the Killer

Frank Capra, Mark Borchardt, George Lucas (hey...don't forget he made THX1138), Akira Kurosawa, the Speilburg who lived during the creation of Close Encounters and E.T., Jenniphr Goodman, Rodriguez (though not in an "action" way...I don't do a lot of action), Paul Thomas Anderson, Mark Romanek...

There are so many. And to say that a director is an influence can be quite misleading...on the surface it would appear that you're saying that you want to make the same type of movie they have made, but things are not nearly as simple as that....at least not for me. There might just be a cerain element that was present in some of their work that really made deep sense.

For instance, I wanted to include Kevin Smith but most definately do not want to imply that I have a desire to make any movie that would in any way resemble what he has done. I just have a deep appreciation for his overall personality and other things I have no way to describe (without creating an entire treatese).

Mark Romanek has directed a big pile of turds, but he also made One Hour Photo. There were elements of that movie that I definately intend to use...but you would more than likely never draw a paralell to what I am working on and One Hour Photo without me directly pointing out where the influence came into effect.

I am influenced by Robert Rodriquez's overall gumption and creativity.

God bless Mark Borchardt's soul altogether.

Do the asterisks mark films you especially recommend?

I'm into documentary more than narrative so Errol Morris, Chris Marker, Steve James, D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, and Frederick Wiseman are big influences.

Since I started this topic, I'm due for some listings myself.

Those are my personal favorites. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them though.

Cool deal. It's a good list. :) I'm curious as to seeing what kinds of films you've done thus far, just given your influences. Do you have a website with trailers and stuff on there?

Another huge one for me is Dario Argento. Especially anything before 1987. If you want to see cool camera movement, check out some of his stuff.

From PTA it was Magnolia that touched me, jermz, and for so many reasons.

I had a hindsight that made me question how exactly I came to leave out, as he is one of the biggest influences on me period....Jon Jost. This man is the most hard core independent I know of....he is not kidding about making movies on his own financially, and on his own terms rebeliously.

Not only are his works trying seriously to get a message across but they are also quite artistically inventive. He devoted himself to making movies after getting released from a 2 year prison stay for draft evasion...made an essay piece called Speaking Directly...his commentary on the state of America at that time. He shot and edited the entire thing at a cabin in Montana that had no running water or electricity...edited the 16mm film by the light of a lantern.

In about 94' he became a Patron Saint of digital video and everything he has done since then has been done on miniDV, the latest of which is a very powerful movie called Homecoming which is one of the most organically human movies I've seen, with some very inventive use of the push transition and two cameras.
