Director showreel format

Hi.
I'm wondering what you think is the best format for a director's showreel?

I ask this because I have seen many director showreels that had more wiz bang editing and super slick cinematography than story in them.
As DP or editor showreels they where great but as director they didn't' show much of an ability to tell stories.

Do you think that a director should show longer segments of set lengths or sections of scenes illustrating plot points? Or fast cut clips of pretty looking shots?

The best ones I've seen have three complete scenes - one each from a different genre (comedy, action, drama, etc). The idea is to show that the director can direct actors and tell a compelling story. You need to see a complete scene to see that, otherwise it's just a cinematography or editing reel.

Anybody have any good examples online?

I think that is defiantly the best way to do it. I have seen many reels that claim to be "director" reels but they contain very little dialog and I walk away not feeling any more confident in their ability. I think 3 scenes under 1-2min each if possible.

This may sound stupid, but where does one send a director's reel?

Well it kinda depends on wat u want to do. You should ask your self what do u want to direct? Commercials? movies? tv shows? music videos....? Usually you would send your reel to a production company that caters towards your interest soo u can get rep'd. You should do research and see who does what. There might be a couple local companies in your area that might do local stuff. Might be a good start. Or look into some of the big agents like RSA, anonymouscontent, MJZ, believemedia, HKM etc... there are tons. Check google or boardmag for a list of the top 20 prod companies. Then submitt your reel and ask them that u are seeking representation.
