Director of SAW II, III, IV - Distributes his own film.

I wonder how hard it would be to sell a movie once the two main people involved are already well known and likely to get press just about anywhere for doing anything.

Nice write up - but I have to wonder, why not just use a fulfillment house?
I can understand not wanting to give up ownership or percentages... but when so much of your time is spent in fulfillment, shipping, tracking, etc it simply seems inefficient.
I mean, look at the length of that blog post, and how much of it is spent talking about the boxes, labels, and delivery of the DVDs.

Seems to me that a more efficient tactic would be to get the discs made yourself, and get a fulfillment house to deal with customer service and shipping/tracking of orders.
Sure, they take a percentage - but it's a minority percentage, and you just saved yourself from the most time consuming work (leaving you time to work on sales, marketing, etc).

Just my 2 cents.
Either way - I love hearing stories like this.

My comment on their site. Having a highly emotional week. Also haven't been shooting recently as I have been working overtime on a steady job to pay for life and restore all the money I spent on shooting.

This is the kind of article that makes me feel like I’m not alone, or crazy, or everything else I hear when I do my thing.
I am nobody. I live in Lebanon, which for movies, is really no place as much as I am nobody. I’ve been into movie making after years in sound and hand drawn animation. I’ve never been released.
I wrote a film. Shot it 6 times, never succeeded. Rewrites every time. And every time it fails it fails because of some arbitrary thing that has to do with an industry I truly believe does not work anymore.
I lost everything I had to make this thing out of my own pocket. I have been working two years now, to make my money back, I have a decent, and hard job, and am so close to making Bye Bye CHARLIE again.
I know deep down inside that all I need to make it the way I want, is my troupe, and my props. The rest is doable. If we are truly independent, we have more time than the biggest studios. It is doable, because it is impossible for a viewer to know what is outside the exposed frame. That’s it. That’s the realization one has to make to completely free oneself.
The other is a release from the ‘bottom line’. I realized if I make my money somewhere else, I don’t need money. I don’t want to sell my film once I make it. I just want it seen. Seriously. I grow my own food now. Tastes better than anything I’ve bought. I can live comfortably without depending on my film to make money. I just wanna shoot it. I know how to. I want to pay for it, so I can do what I want, and not pay extra. I don’t care if it’s bootlegged even.
It’s just so ****ing lonely. Until I read stuff like this.
God. Friggin. Bless. You.
Or Satan. Whichever suits your palate more

Call me cynical but this is the first place I went as well. Another 'Old media' success story leverages existing fame, fortune and global fan base to find success in new in new media experiment. Shocker. Yes, it can be entertaining to read about their adventure into self-imposed DIY-land but I doubt they do it again. I'd rather read about people working in DIY-land out of necessity, not choice, and how they are working, or have worked, their way out into successful careers.
