directing music vido advice

So do you have any advice on directing a music video?

Or is there a manual somewhere online that you know of?

My friend for example shoots the videos with sped up sound, but I am not sure why exactly. To better mach lips in post-production? But I feel like it creates more problems in post-production.

Thank you.

Sounds like you should shadow your friend on his shoots and ask lots of questions. There's nothing like being in a real shooting situation to start seeing how things are done.

The shooting with sped up sound is so that when the sound is played back at normal speed and the video slowed down to match, the performers will be singing at a normal pitch, but they will be moving in slow motion. It's a gimmick, but still useful if used sparingly.

If you shoot with sped up audio and overcrank to 60fps when you play back slow at 24 or 30fps you get a slow motion feel to the footage, but with perfect lip synch.
You can also do the opposite and play the audio back really slow, have the band play really slow and then record normal speed. When you speed the footage back up the person looks like theyre moving really quickly and twitchy but they are perfectly lip synched. Floria Sigismondi does this alot in her Tool videos. It makes it look stop motion animated. She also does stop motion.
