Directing: art imitating life

I was presented with a script to direct the other day. I've been thinking about for a bit. The question that keeps on popping in my mind is does a director have a line that he doesn't cross. the script takes on the drama of war with soldiers being held hostage and killed in the name of negotiation positioning. but the thematic message of the story is of redemption when a rogue government agent is held responsible for saving his comrades and in not doing so renders them dead. Though we see hostage being shot it's in the nature of subject of the beast.

I'm thinking that filmmaking are here to tell the story whether it's from side A or side B.

what are your thoughts on this?

First, congrats on the offer!

Second, In my personal opinion film makers are here to tell a story, whether harsh, sad, scary, or what-have-you. Look at the Saw series. People who were essentially innocent were basically put to death for sins they have committed, in a rather harsh way. You have to think, war isn't a pretty thing.

If you look around at films, there have been times hostages have died, one being the film Inside Man, though we learn it was a hoax, but still, it was a death of a hostage whilst in negotiation.

Shooter was based on attrocities committed by the US.

Hotel Rwanda, genocide

Blood Diamond, genocide, and child soldiers

Granted, they were based on true events, but the concept is the same. You are here to tell a story, I would go tell it.

Best of luck,

Matt

sounds pretty realistic. i mean, i look at art imitating life all the time... there are stories being made right now about the virginia tech killer, who murders all these innocent people who have nothing to do with his problems. Imagine a story from their perspective, starting in high school as they deal with drama & personal problems going through puberty, the parents divorce and the kid is dealing with massive depression, finally pulls his act together, graduates high school, makes a scholarship to VT, celebrations all around, goes off to college with the hopes of taking on the world and then gets shot dead by some jerkoff. What's the story there? But you can see it.

Sometimes failure is a story, too.
