I'm looking for DVDs with good commentary/featurettes that deal with directing actors. I know Ridley Scott has some good detailed stuff on the Alien bonus disc. Any other suggestions?

You should watch "The Directors" on the Reelz channel. It's pretty much just actors talking about the directors and why it is they liked them. The best way to be a good director of actors is to listen to what actors say makes a good director.

I was always a fan of Nicholas Meyer's Star Trek II commentary for the brief moments he talks about getting a good performance out of William Shatner. :)

On the book front my favorite by far is Sidney Lumet's Making Movies. The guy has three things going for his advice:

1) He came from a theatre background

2) He talks at length about working with actors, from casting onwards

3) He always knew before casting whether he was willing to put up with someone or not, which leads me to believe the guy actually had a smooth running set with very little drama...

4) Oh, and he made great movies.
