Direct Firewire Capture Devices

Recently I was in a very 'bad' condition for shooting, namely the desert, dusty and major winds... and my camera suffered.

This lead me to look for devices that can capture directly from the Firewire 'live' to a recording harddrive that may be a bit more weather proof (for some value of weather...), so that I would not have to remotely be tempted to open the camera to change tapes or the like.

I saw a few devices, but would like to see if there are some recommendations, or experiences with users here.

Thanks

Maybe you didn't see the part where he needed it to be weatherproof?

Yes, the primary reason for my interest is because of shooting in 'adverse' situations. But as some 'fundamental' level I really hate tape... especially the miniDV tape width. In 'computer' land, I have always avoided the 4mm tape, because of many, many occaions were backup tapes were basically unreadable after only a few runs in the tape drive to recover data. I took to the policy of only recovering the full tape 'once' then re-backing up on a new tape.

Sure, disk drivers crash, etc... but I've had many more problems with tape that I care to deal with...

I've seen references to the 'firestore' product, and thanks for the name of another one with 'citidisk'.

Both seem to be about the same approximate price of $700-900, so it may have to wait until my next 'absolutely' needed project.

Thanks

I just picked up a Firestore FS-4 Pro. I do alot of my work in the rugged landscape out here (Wyoming) and the Firestore has been outstanding in adverse conditions. No problems at all and this is soooo much better than tape! It makes editing a dream.
