Diopters question

Can I use a Diopter to achieve shallow depth of field? Since they magnify the image so as to capture clear images of an object extremely close-up, wouldn't objects in the background become obscure?

Can this be a way of getting the shallow depth look?

Re: Diopters question

I put some examples of the diopter being used in the shallow-DOF look on the DVX DVD.

Basically, no it won't give you any shallower DOF than you could get otherwise. But yes, it could help you get that look in tight quarters where you can't zoom all the way in. And it'll have more of an effect on a DVX100 than on a DVX100A.

The diopter lets you get closer while still zooming in, so for a very tight head shot or, more likely, an ECU, you can get closer and zoom in more than you could without it, which will lead to a bit of the shallow DOF effect. But you'd have to use a low-power diopter; something like the Nikon 5T. The 6T is too strong at 2.9 (I think that's its magnification) and so you can't focus far enough away to get a full head shot.

Re: Diopters question

It doesn't sound like it's something worth getting, judging by your description of it.

Re: Diopters question

Like most things, it's only worth it if you need it. But unless you need tons of extreme-close-ups, it's pointless.
