Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

Great tests man. That last one is so close. I couldn't see myself ever needing to shoot that close, but you never know. ;D Keep it up.

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

Did you use achromat diopters? I dont see any color smearing but sometimes you cant see it because the subject hides it well. Did you see any in the corners of the frame. Black on white shows it.

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

Thanks for doing this btw. I asked if they were achromates because I've love to find some good ones that are 72mm

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

Cool, thanks for posting the test. I've been interested in these. You say it's cheap glass you bought. Could you post some info about it?

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

Good tests and some further info -

Diopters on the front of the lens moves the focus measurement from the focal plane to the subject. The front of the lens to the subject is where you measure from.

A #1 Diopter works in the range of 36" ( 1metre)
A #2 Diopter works in the range of 18" (.5 metre)
1+2 combined = #3 range of 9"
A #4 Diopter is approx 4.5"

The advantage of diopters is that you can use the full range of the zoom also (as opposed to the macro function in the Zoom itself).

Eg. you can shoot a portrait shot on the wide end with a #2 Diopter if the subject is in the range of 18" - They do have a slight effect of reducing D.O.F in combination with wide aperture)

Johan

Thanks for the tests. Very helpful. I think I gotta pick up some diopters. 40" minimum object distance just isn't close enough (on zoom 99).

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

Thanks all for the replies. I don't have much info on these diopters. It was a very cheap kit I ran across for like $50 and just couldn't resist getting it for a test. I also got a similar kit for my digital SLR. The only info I have about them is what says on the lenses themself in the photos.

Personally I find the +1 & +2 diopters the most useful ones, since they offer good closeup possabilities and can be stacked together to get me close enough for my needs. I don't know if I ever would need to get closer than that, and like Shooter pointed out, a +1 or +2 can even be used when shooting portrait and simlilar to reduce the depth of field a little.

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

Johan thanx for this nice input.

btw where did you pick this kit....if in Stockholm?

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

For the orignal DVX100, I got the canon 500D achromatic (+2 I think) when I had to shoot some close-up pics from a book. I was able to get some fine detail at pretty close range.

Great tests. Good job.

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

Happy New Year to Everyone!!

Thanks for sharing your test with us! It's a great job.
I have always wondered if you can notice a change in DOF when adding a close up lens and focusing an object which is not close. Could it be a way of getting a more cinematographic look?
Thanks!

Re: Diopter/macro test - Get those real closeups!

They only seem to have a minimal effect on DOF when shooting in normal ranges. Note: each Diopter has a range of actual focusability.
