Dimmer box cord length

I am looking at building my own dimmer box and was wondering if there is any reason that you would not want to extend the cord to be longer that are going out of the box?

All the dimmers that I have seen to buy only have about 4 inches coming out of both sides of the box, which means I would always have to have an extension cord from the dimmer to the plugin.

Thanks.

That makes it easier to carry around/store the dimmer box. Electrically, there is little (not no) difference between having a long integral cord and an extension cord plug into the box.

I made one with an 8' cord and ended up cutting it down to a couple of inches, it was just too akward to store.

That's why most electrical devices we use have "pig tails". Just too much trouble to roll the cords all the time and put them away so they don't get tangled.
