digitizing with dvx

So I've been trying to get some footage off of a vcd in .dat format and have given up trying to convert it using software.
I have a dvd/vcd player composite into my dvx, then out through firewire into my G4/ FCPHD. When I play the vcd I get video and sound on my computer. When I hit CAPTURE NOW FCP thinks for a while and then gives me the old WAITING FOR TIMECODE.
How do I get FCP to put on its own time code and let me capture the footage?
Thanks.

I forget exactly where the menu option is but you need to be in Non-Controllable Device mode. Actually, come to think of it, it may even just be under one of the tabs in the Log & Capture window. Hope that helps.
Peace,

I have not tried this with the DVX, but I once tried to play back a DVD from my PS2 to my Canon ZR40, which also does analaog conversion. It would go for about 5 seconds, then I'd get a copyrighted media notice and it would stop. I would imagine the same would happen with the DVX given a copyrighted DVD.

Yeah, Macrovision may prohibit copying any kind of protected DVD or even VHS if I remember correctly. Anyway, that's not really here nor there.
Peace,

-Harry

No problems DVD copyright protection on this stuff. VCDs made from DV footage shot by a friend on a trip overseas, edited and burned to VCD. Aparently VCD is all the rage in India. I think VCDs (.dat files) sort of suck and I am going through all of this to get it onto DVD. Anyway, sleep easy dude.

I am having a problem though. When I change to Non-Controllable Device mode, and hit capture now, it goes to the capture window and says allocating disk space. I have 110GB free on a 160GB firewire drive. What is with the unending delay before capturing begins? Is this just a RAM issue(512MB)?
