Digitizing VHS to Quicktime/other codec

Has anyone had a good experience capturing VHS tape into Final Cut using a hardware product such as Pinnacle's Dazzle or something similar? I am looking to digitize a VHS tape and work with it in a format that will be comparable to the quality I would have seen in a tape player. Ultimately my end result is an standard def DVD.

Thanks!

I've done that before. It was a Pinnacle product. I can't remember exactly what it was though. It had a little breakout box on it for input and output. I captured the footage and edited it with Avid (on PC) and the quality was fine for what it was. It was old 8mm footage transfered to video tape which I made a DVD from and gave to my mom as a gift.

You can also run inputs into a DVX if you have one and then go firewire out from the camera to capture. Works like a charm and will save you some cash if you don't have a hardware device for it yet.

I've had great success just capturing via Firewire from a JVC dual miniDV/SVHS deck straight into FCP (JVC HR-DVS2U). There's one of these on ebay right now... I'm not going to part with mine, though :-)

When I was using Windows, I had a Pinnacle DV500 with breakout box that was used.

Shouldn't most cameras with analog in be able to do this pass-through? And if not pass through, record onto the DV media, and capture that?
