Digitizing Tapes onto DVDs?

Hi, I shot a music video for a friend's band. Their label wants to give the tapes to their editors to work it up. Anyway, they don't want the actual tapes I shot. They want me to digitize them and send them a DVD.

I have a new iMac and Final Cut Express. I want to get them the absolute best quality on DVD for them. Any suggestions on how to do that?

Thanks a lot

Their editor wants it on DVD?? the raw footage? how's he going to edit it then? if he pulls the footage off of a DVD, he's losing a LOT of quality. When writing to DVD, you're converting it to another format and compressing it (losing quality). Then if he wants to pull it off of a DVD, he's got to convert it again, losing more quality.

Every editor knows this... so something is not right with the equation.

Unless that is, they just want the RAW footage put onto DVD's (in quicktime format)?? IF that's the case, log your footage, put a DVD in your burner, copy the raw quicktime files over to the dvd, press burn. How much footage do you have? each mini dv tape holds roughly 13gb's, and a dvd only hold 4.7gb or 9 on a dual layer. You'll be sending more than one DVD, and you may have to break up the clips to fit.

thanks for the help by the way. I have about a tape and a half of footage. I just want to give them the best quality to work with I guess. So I guess quicktime is the way to go?

You should just send them the tapes or charge extra for the digitizing and dvd burning. That's going to take several, even dozens of hours to do.

I'd just send copies of the tapes. If you send QuickTimes- what happens if they're on a PC with Avid or Vegas? If they really want it ready to edit- they need to pay for that. Record company execs are only eclipsed by lawyers in their desire to get your $$$.

Sure- run a Firewire cable between two Cameras or decks. Or send the tapes to a dub house and have the label pay for the dubs. Is your friend's band working for free? Then you shouldn't either. What a concept. :bath:

I can run firewire between two cameras, but only one is the dvx100b with 24 p that I shot on. What would happen to the footage if I recorded it to or from the little canon handy cam?
