Digitizing Hell

Ok, so i am first time editor, using my new Final Cut 4 HD.
I have shot all my footage on 24p f5, and i am intercutting with MOS 16mm transferred from digibeta and dubbed down to Mini DV

Now , I am not sure what i have to do to prep my footage to be edited. I have no other monitor except the one on my labtop

----What I did-----
1) I logged my media, and batch captured from there on to my Lacie hardrive.

However, I was informed that this is not correct way to capture footage with this camera/setting....and eventually you will see the interlaced frames
what do i have to do to avoid this now and not worry about when i export to either a DVD, Mini DV, etc?

so if i am in the wrong, do i have to log and digitize/capture all over again? Can i still use my remaining logs and recapture them? How do i remove the digitized material out of my logs, so just the logs remain?

HOW WILL THIS WORK WHEN I BRING IN THE 16MM? any guidlines?

anyways, i really appreciate any help someone could give me, as i have a time limit for post, and i am learning the hard way. thank you.

Re: Digitizing Hell

You shot 24p using F5. This means you have the option to edit at 29.97 or at 23.98. If you were going to film or to a 24fps DVD then you'll want to remove the pulldown with Cinema Tools.

29.97 with interlacing is not a bad thing. Any film footage you see on television or on tape is 29.97 with interlace. Without interlacing it would look jerky on ordinary video. It may not look great on your computer monitor but your real target is probably video where interlace is a good thing. 29.97 allows you to go to DVD with iDVD.

In any case you want your film footage to match on video (23.98 or 29.97). Standard telecine pulldown will produce 29.97 with interlace. If you want to use it as 23.98 then remove pulldown with Cinema Tools. Your other option for 23.98 film is to telecine 1:1 (1 film frame to 1 video frame) and have them dump to a disk. No need to removal pulldown.

Re: Digitizing Hell

so it will not look interlaced if i set the clip to play at 23.98/24 fps...where and how can i do that...

this means, i can keep my logged and digitized footage....just each clip individually.

Re: Digitizing Hell

It won't look interlaced if you convert to 24fps or if you playback what you have now on a real video monitor. (any DV camera shoudl be able to output to a TV)

Open Cinema Tools and go the Help menu. Search for 24 fps.
You'll want to reverse telecine the clips you've brought in if you want it to be in 24fps.

For the basics of 24fps and FCP:

Doesn't cover details of Cinema Tools conversion though.

Re: Digitizing Hell

Should be no need to re-digitize. Read the Cinema Tools Help function under 24fps, reverse telecine. You'll need to process all of your clips but you shouldn't have to re-digitize.

Re: Digitizing Hell

You'll have to do a reverse telecine processing in all your files and you will have to create a 23.97fps sequence, and edit in it. Then you'll be set. But if you don't have any interest in going to a progressive DVD or back to film, you will be just fine the way you are.
