I just spent three hours working with 2 other people to try to figure out the best way to do this. I hope someone out there can offer some insight!
We are working on a documentary and we need to digitize all of the footage for an offline edit. We are shooting 1080i50 HDV on Sony Z1 cameras; but we don't want to digitize the footage at full resolution because we are going to have hundreds of hours of tape. We want to digitize at a resolution that will take up even less hard drive space than DV.
It seems that in FCP no matter how we tweak the capture settings it still captures at full resolution! We set the HDV deck to playback at DV resolution, but the file size is still too big. Finally we set the compressor to MPEG-4 and we were able to lower the file size that way, but now the video has to render everytime we pull it onto the timeline.
Has anyone encountered this problem before. What is the best way to capture footage that will look as good as possible but with the smallest possible file size to do an offline edit?
Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.
