Digital wireless?

I read a pressrelease about a new Sony digital wireless system and was wondering how much such a unit would cost?
I guess a digital signal would make wireless transmission as good as one via cable...?
It probably won`t be in budget range for me right now, but like most audio equipment it will last much longer than video stuff I hope...

So what´s out there and how much is it?

It's still a bit early for good digital wireless.

Quality will depend on the bit-rate used.

And be careful of latency - ie: lip-sync.

The ISO spec. spectrum mask is a bit tight to get a decent digital signal in and those I've seen so far are right on the edge.

Zaxcom makes several all digital options coming in at abou $4000 a channel.

Lectro has their digital hybird 4xx series coming in at about $2500 per channel.

Ricsonix has been promising a digital Blutooth wireless for several years for around $1000 a channel. Downside being a VERY limited range. Good for ENG camera hop or sit down interviews but risky for anything involving even mild distances. It still seems to be permenently stuck in the vaporware category but hope springs eternal. Their PinMic is awesome and makes me want to believe.

The delay on the Lectro and Zaxcom is about 2-3ms. You will have no problem with sync but problems can arrive if you mix the digital with an analog signal.

You can find diversity on both analog and digital wireless. In fact most higher end wireless use diversity.

The newer Zaxcom tx also come with built in flash recorders so even if you drop a signal you have a backup at the source.

Side note; Zaxcom claims their signal is better then wired over longer distances as there is no signal degredation while even balanced line has a minute degradation over distance. Since it's not perceivable I don't think it matters either way. It's fun to watch them argue that point though.

Cheers

So Zaxcom have improved it then - it was at least 7ms when I saw them a couple of years ago.
