Digital Sputnik DS-1 or Hive 100-C

Thanks for sharing, Teddy!

Very interesting functionality! I can see all sorts of uses for them.

As for the CRI, that is something I'm less concerned with nowadays. I am concerned with spectrograph readings and if the wavelengths I need are well reproduced by a specific emitter. And while the CRI is low on the DS units, the work they are used in has looked very good. So that is promising. But I have not personally used them so I cannot speak from experience.

But yeah, it is always prudent to

I don't understand the high enthusiasm surrounding the digital sputnik fixtures considering their low CRI / TCLI.

http://www.gtc.org.uk/members-area/tlci-results/current-tlci-results.aspx

this has the TCLI of the DS3 at 29 to 47 , which sounds really bad.

I'm guessing here but with most lights it's a pretty simple test, you compare and calculate based on how the light looks compared to the reference.

Lights where you can change the hue and saturation - well there's a step of matching what you're looking for. To my eye in the reference charts i find the DS1 rendition of some of the colours *nicer* than the reference, more saturated. So i would guess that with the light properly controlled you could match the reference a lot closer than they did. But they didn't do that and so the figures and calculated values are low, despite the fact that i think it looks nicer than the reference.

So with RGBW lights all bets are off when it comes to CRI/TCLI because there's an extra step of calibration that i suspect most testers aren't bothered about...

cheers
Paul

Any updates about those WASP 100-C !? did anyone received them yet and care to share his thoughts with us!
Thanks

They sent out another update today, but nothing new regarding which units are preparing to ship. But the iPhone control App is available, now. Still waiting on my two. They shipped the first 30 backers theirs a few weeks ago. I did a quick Google search last week and I still haven't seen any 'real world'/production sample reviews, yet.

I just got an email a few hours ago that mine are shipping. I backed two as well... believe I was #46. I'll update with first impressions when they arrive...

Cool. Looking forward to hearing real world impressions.

I emailed Robert earlier this evening to check on mine. He responded in less than 10 minutes. That's good customer service and a good sign of a company that wants to take care of its users. Mine are going to be a few weeks later than I thought, but I'm much farther down the list than you(like 150+).

I'm eager to hear you're experiences with the 100-C! I'm personally thinking about picking one up after using their Wasp Par lights for so long. The ability to have a color adjustable light like that sounds super handy for those special circumstances.

A quick update... my two 100-C's lights arrived on Friday afternoon. But I've had absolutely minimal time to test them out and literally just did tonight. Initial impressions are good though... everything about the light is pretty much as promised / advertised. Fan is there but super quiet and shouldn't ever be a factor with sound. Controlling color / temp / hue & sat is pretty simple and straight forward. I like that you have both "fast" control and then can push the adjustment knob for finer tuning on all parameters. The iOS app is pretty slick and even gives perhaps a more intuitive way to control the hue and sat - since it gives a color readout and you can simply drag your finger to the approx color you are going for. I can certainly see using the app quite a bit - especially on smaller jobs. One minor complaint is that while using the app - and maybe I'm missing something here in first test - the local readout on the back of the unit itself doesn't update/change as you change via the app... can see this being confusing when working with crew.
Going by experience / eye, I would think power output is roughly equivalent to a tungsten 650 watt, perhaps a bit more - but then you obviously don't loose any output when dialing thru the "main" 3200 - 6500 range... so if comparing to tungsten you actually gain power instead of having to gel with half or full daylight. Having that extended range from 1650 all the way to 8000 is sweet - along with of course changing color and saturation.
My quick run through of colors looks good... and can see how these could possibly be used to light green screen more effectively - or perhaps even without the actual "green" of a backdrop if you were in a pinch (need to test this). Also am excited to test this as a key light after seeing the less than stellar results in another thread here. I would think being able to add a bit of warmth to certain skin tones and doing so on set would be a huge advantage - especially for those of us who often work on budgets that don't provide pro make-up.
Unit itself is light weight. Not sure it would survive rigors of large crew / harsh handling - but that's not my intentions with them. Powering via a 90wh V lock battery was simple using a d tap to 4 pin xlr cable that I already owned. Need to test how long it will run the light but I saw no difference in power output when switching between AC / DC. Also need to purchase accessory or find a convenient way to mount v lock battery to light stand - to make these super portable. Another minor compliant is that the AC power supply has a fairly short 4 pin cable that goes from the "brick" supply itself to the light ( the 3 prong AC chord itself is probably 10 ft). While it does come with a 4 pin extension cable roughly 10 ft - this means without using that extension cable - I'll need to come up with velcro or some system to keep the power supply attached to a light stand since if stand is higher than a few feet it means the power supply will hang down mid air and not reach the floor. Not a huge deal, and maybe nitpicking - just wish they would have had something come with the power supply already - since it seems they thought of most everything else.
Briefly tried the light with a Profoto Zoom accessory that I have - and it was a bit of a tight fit getting it on - but did work with the light (but perhaps isn't an accessory I'll use often on this light).
Overall, very happy with purchase. Certainly need to use with camera and further testing to see how accurate WB / Kelvin numbers are...but I'm pretty hopeful they will be very versatile additions to my kit.
