Digital recorder instead of mixer?

Yes, and it's so very important to have the best possible preamps when recording dialog.

I think the aaton cantar is at the very top of the list.

It depends on the criteria - in many ways I would agree with you; but I still think that the mic. pres in the Nagra are better, even though the Cantar is double the price of the Nagra.

When recording it always important to have the best possible quality everything.

Yes - I know you wrote this tongue-in-cheek - but don't forget that the human ear is most sensitive to frequencies and quality within the speech band and will pick-up problems here easier than anywhere else.

The dialogue is more important than the pictures, you neglect at your peril.

The wireless gear doesn't impact the sound quality (barring ground loop issues). I guess it's just more indicative of your focus, which is on something other than sound,

That is not really true unless your using one of the new digital full bandwidth devices. All of the analog devices compand the audio and you do take a hit, though for dialog it's not much of one with the better systems.

And both are multiples beyond the budget that the OP was talking about.

Yes, John, we know those Nagra pres are good.. don't rub it in for us SD owners in US.
I like the transformer pres better in the SD mixers than the recorders.
And yes, the sound is more important than the pic!

im really not that big of a fan of nagra's.

Having used all of the above mentioned..
i still think cantar's are the best.
That being said since we never seem to record in a vacuum in my opinion ..ANY of those choices are going to be well above "extremely good"

It's not that model. He pointed out that he did NOT own a recorder, only a mixer. Still not sure what he has. I do know he has an internal cable boom and an ME-66 (not my favorite). I asked to see a video of something he had
done sound on and have not heard back yet.

While it might be useful to see the video it would be much more informative to talk to either the director or post sound person. I have "fixed" some really bad production sound and seen some pretty decent production sound trashed by an editor and it's very hard to know if the bad sound was the best of a REALLY bad situation or total incompetence in a great situation. His "mixer" would give me pause but?
