Digital Projector for 1080p?

Does anyone have a suggestion on a good projector to show 1080p footage to a large audiance? I'd like to buy one and set it up locally as a way for some of us HVX users to be able to show our films in San Francisco. I think I can get this going at the ATA, but their projectors suck. I'm hoping not to pay more than $3000. Will the Panasonic PT-AE900U work? I was hoping for a DLP projector, but I'll accept whatever will do the job.

I don't think there are any cheap 1080 projectors. If I remember right (and I might not, my memory is crap) the panny projector is 720 only.

Were you @ that BAVC meeting a while ago? Or is this a separate thing? And.. uhmr, what is ATA?

Turing is right.

I used to have the ancestor of the 900 (the 700).
It was very, very good for the money. It had a slight problem with vertical banding which tended to appear when the image projected contained big washes of low contrast color - I'd check whether this has been fixed or not in the 900.
But I would still by the ae700 all over again despite that issue.

My two cents on DLPs: I'd steer away from them. You might not suffer from the rainbow effect, but you never know when one of your viewers/guests/clients might.
I see the rainbows so much that I can't bear to watch DLP projected material.

Check out proxima 9410 on ebay buy now for $2100 used. Bulbs are a little pricy but DLP at 2100 ansi lumes with HD at 1280x1080 and a great looking projector. It sold for $20,000 new. I bought a Proxima PRO AV SX1 and I love the dlp look and its only a 1000 lumes but looks much better than the little cheap ones. Both are very smooth looking. The Proxima PRO AV SX1 sold for $17500 and I pick it up at Boeing surplus for $450 with the case and I love it.

Yes, I was at the BAVC meeting. But BAVC doesn't really have a viewing room. The ATA does (Artist's Television Access). They just don't have good projects. I had a DLP projector before and I really liked it. The only time I got the rainbow effect was when I shook my head really really fast.

I used to run the Super 8 Militia over at the ATA. I think it would be cool to start a HD group out of there where we could hold a screening every two months of HD movies done by the group or others. The ATA would charge people $5 to see our movies, give us half, and sell beer and wine to people. At least that's how I remember it works.

I'll have to get more info on the projectors you all suggest. I mean is it worth getting a 1080p projector for this? Perhaps 720p is good enough. Maybe the brightness is more important so we can all see it on a damn big screen.

Not true.

As long as you can control the ambient lighting this projector is easily bright enought. I saw it two weeks ago on a 150" screen with an audience of 35+. Stewart Studio Tek screen, they could easily up the screen to 250" probably more. The Sony is the least expensive native 1920x1080p projector on the market.

If you don't mind a 720p there plenty of 3-chip DLP that'll easily produce acceptable large format images, look at Panasonic 7700 line, you'd want to rent this not buy it for the screening - $25K.

If you must buy a super cheap projector, as was mentioned, the Panasonic AE900 (under $2K) will be okay as long as you keep the screen size under 100" (up to 120" if you add screen gain). Use the bulb in High mode.

If you don't mind Single chip DLP (I personally hate 'em) There's the Optoma HD7100. Best image quality of single chip DLP (for the money) hands down. The projector can be found for around $2500 after rebate.
