Digital Projection

Anyone have any experience with projecting a moving background digitally?? I would like to shoot a scene in a moving car at night and was wondering what kind of results people can get with this method. Also what kind of screen or background would you use that would be big enough to project outside of a car. Please share your tricks. Thanks.

i just haven't seen/heard about much background projection done lately ..
today seems to be blue/green screen then background composited in post ..

the last time i used background projection was ?? 1995?? a company was hired and they brought their own special 35mm projector .. they then sync the 35mm camera to the projector (cable) ... this was shot at night at a drive in movie venue so the screen was very larger ... a small stage was built approx 6ft ft off ground with overhead rigging for lights .. band was on stage ...

i did this last month.
We tried 3 different digital projectors. It is not easy to work with them. First you need a lot of light. And they are expensive, about €4000. Second with DLP technology is hard to get rid of flickering. In the end we used an 8 segment wheel DLP projector filming at 1/60. The movie from the background was shot on location and then graded.

the TV series "24" shoots car, helicopter sceens with background projections...

read about it here...

DP Rodney Charters: "....very few people realise it.. Of course all of our television monitor playback on set is shot with our 3-chip DVCAM PD150s, but then all of our driving interiors cars, SUVs, helicopters, trucks – you name it – are shot on the stage using digital back projection from a 10,000 lumen Eiki projector. These are positioned so that they can be seen outside the windows of the vehicles, and we light the interiors to match. Night was relatively easy and day more challenging, but now it has become a very efficient process (we dub it the “Poor Man’s Process”).

He also says from next season they are planning to use Sony Z1 for projections

Very incouraging to read that redindian. Thanks. Also thanks for the tips mcgregor. I will give it a try and see what kind of images I can get.
