Digital photo frame hacked into portable monitor?

No I haven't done this but surely it must be possible. There are some really nice screens out now and the price is right. Most of them can play video from sd cards or memory stick. Some can mirror vga via usb. How hard would it be solder in a break-out box for video connections. I would rather attempt this than try to build a case for the lcd kits.

Would it be as simple as finding out exactly what screen is in the frame and sourcing a controller board to go with it?

Are you attempting to get pictures to show on a portable monitor? And if so, with or without a connection to a computer?

I have been thinking about this. My father is a retired (micro)electrician and computertechnician, who has built amazing stuff both on the job (Technical department of the University of Utrecht, their team built sensors for the Large Hadron Collider among other things) and off the job.

I'll be seeing him next sunday and I will ask him what he thinks. (Maybe I get him fired up and he'll start building it for me... or maybe he won't.)

I asked my father and he said that it would not be easily done: the LCD needs its instructions about what to show at what pixel, and the embeded stuff isn't usable for that. So you would (indeed) need a breakout box or something. But that won't just work.

He said it would be too much work and extra costs for additional material to make it work, in comparison to the affordable other solutions. Like this:

(It's a link, specs are behind it.)

Ofcourse this is not high-end, but neither would a mod on a digital photoframe be.

So dad isn't going to help me with it, I presume. Thus I let it go... :)

Sorry I can't bring better news.
