Digital Performer 5 for intel macs

I'm going to buy sequencing software for scoring movies very soon. I'm going either for DP5 or Logic, but logic scares the crap out of me so I'm leaning toward DP5.

Mostly, I'm wondering if anyone has any info about whether DP5 is universal yet, but also, if anyone has any thoughts of DP5 vs Logic for my composing needs, I'd like to hear them.

THANKS!

After just getting Shake for $499, I'm wondering if they'll cut me that kind of discount on Logic...

Digi Performer is a mainstay in the scoring area for movies, I run 4.6 and it has a lot of great features for intergration with movies, QT, and all that. A lot more user friendly than Pro Tools, the other Hollywood scoring mainstay, and much better interface than Logic. Logic has kind of gone the way of creating music with all the plugs, etc, and I think Apple puts more of the scoring to movies functionality in Soundtrack, which pales in comparsion to DP.

What about Cubase by Steinberg?

Steinberg invented the VST and VSTi standard, and their software is quite good. VST's work in any DAW, but they work very well in Cubase (naturally).

By the way, if you don't use VSTi's these days you're really missing-out. For example, you can get virtual Moog Modular, Prophet 5, DX7, Mellotron, ARP's, crazy hybrid instruments, etc. which really can really make your music shine.

Just a thought...

Far as I know, DP5 is NOT universal yet. I think MOTU was talking about releasing it in the second quarter of 06, but that obviously hasn't happened. I'm still running 4.5, so I haven't been keeping too close of tabs on it, but that's all I could find from MOTU and maccentral.

I used DP years ago and really liked it when I had to sync up racks of synths. Then I migrated to Pro Tools, but just recently (2 years ago), made the move to Logic and haven't looked back. It fits my needs well and as far as I need has pretty tight integration with Quicktime to score and sweeten/mix film & video work. The software synthesis is what got me. It's pretty incredible everything you get right out of the box.
