Has anyone here created a DCP output for 2k (or 4k) digital cinema projection? I've been reading about this, and have come across some conflicting reports.
Some people say that you can create a set of DCP files and take it to any digital cinema projector in the world. I've also seen people say there are possibly 8 or more different formats that you must take into account.
There are professional service bureaus that will convert your project to a DCP master, for a fee. There are also open source tools that will allow you to create your own master. I know there seem to be at least two standards: MXF Interop and SMPTE. I believe SMPTE is the newer standard. It is not clear to me if there is one standard that can be played everywhere, or if multiple DCP releases must be made to take different projectors into account.
When you get right down to it, the format basically seems to be JPEG 2000 files in the XYZ color space inside of an MXF container file, WAV files inside an MXF container file, and some XML files to tie them together and provide additional metadata.
My ultimate goal (and I know people out there have done this) would be to use open source tools such as opendcp so I could have the ability to create my own DCP releases as needed.
Does anyone here have any experience with this? I'd be really curious to hear about everyone's experiences.
