I think it has more to do with marketing of the company. First of all, by now DB is on the same track as RED Scarlet, which is basically an endless delay. Second is the footage itself- if you watch GoPro footage reel, it makes you want to run out and buy the camera. It's supposed to be a camera for film makers- go and do a film, instead of releasing a bunch of shots. The hype build up, the hypster marketing, but the footage and the use of the footage doesn't simply live up to the hype. The other thing is this "in-crowd" mentality- that is really turning me off. The same way I would never buy RED, due to fanatical behavior of some of the board members. For me a camera is just a tool, it doesn't up my status, it doesn't make me a better film maker. The footage released looked so-so, and most definitely is not backed up by some great creativity.
The problem with this - is the fact that you're comparing footage from companies that had a finished camera that was tested, fixed, tested, fixed etc. What DB is doing is letting the consumer in to the process. Letting them peek behind the curtain to see the development. They are doing it differently. You may not like that, but you at least need to acknowledge it and understand it before you dismiss them because of it.
Did you know that the night footage was the first footage the camera ever took at night? Did you know that the Salton Sea footage was the first footage that the camera ever took outside? Did you know that both shoots were done with cameras that have already been improved upon?
I know I know I know - "then don't release any footage until it's finished so I won't get pissed" I get it. They just want to do it differently. People either get that or they don't.
