Digital Bolex music video

What's the situation with this cam and menu options, compared to your C100s, etc. I'm talking gamma settings, color matrix, etc. etc. Does it have any of that or is as bare bones in that respect as it seems from the site?

It doesn't have extensive options, since you are meant to do that sort of adjusting in post. It has white balance settings, ISO settings, and some frame rate options and that's about it.

I thought people were being a little harsh when they kept saying the makers of this cam were hipsters. After watching this "music video," however, I got nothing.

Even so, I'm happy for the hippie cam :D

Unlike any video camera, with a raw camera all of this is done in post. White balance, exposure compensation, color matrix, gamma, highlight and shadow control, black and white clip points (within sensor limits), detail and sharpening, noise reduction, log curves, etc. are all meta data applied in post during the first stage debayer process. There is basic white balance preset metadata recorded in camera, but it is not baked into the raw data and can be modified at will.
The menu options are pretty much those that directly affect exposure: ISO settings, frame rates, shutter angle/speed.

Wow, he reminds of the kind of guy you meet at West Hollywood after-parties at 4AM, smoking pot and going on about "society" - the kind of person who makes me want to leave said party as fast as possible.

Gee, these guys are going from bad to worse. With all this talent around, can't they just hand a camera into some capable hands and produce a killer short? This might be a good example of "how not to light a scene", but why do it on a promo video, while on the top they make us listen to a guy who can't even hold a key while singing? Just pathetic and sad.

I gotcha. So this is really not a videographer's/ENG cam unless you (the shooter) or your client is absolutely doing to do color correction in post, it seems? That's aside from the 5GB a minute or whatever it shoots (though they mention somewhere possibly releasing a compressed HD recording option down the line).

I don't get it though - why buy this when there are so many alternatives at comparable cost that record RAW at reasonable data rates?

Because the color gradients have a subtle gradation unique to CCDs, and it has a global shutter resultng in a noticeably superior cadence, and it has amazing audio capacity, and it has interchangable mounts, and it has builtin Enterprise Grade SSD with asynchronous offload to either external drives or builtin CF card writer, because it shows data usage, becuase it has decent ergonomics, because it is significantly cheaper than any other RAW global shutter camera with similar sized SSD solution.

And some testers say it has the unique "filmic" experience.

What alternatives did you have in mind? If it is true uncompressed 12 bit DNG raw the data rate is the same for the same resolution regardless of the camera. Roughly 75MB/sec for 24fps 1080p HD. Hacked DSLR's don't really count in my book, fun experiments but not practical for many uses. Forget the audio. The BMC's make nice pictures except for aliasing and moire, but have poor audio and ongoing QC and media reliability issues.

and a magenta hue to all face samples seen so far.

The sound is good. The IQ is good. I do not like the lighting or magenta hue in this video. Magenta is really unflattering to human beings. A little warm, or a little cool, ok, but not magenta.

If it's in camera audio, why do you need the slate exactly?

The audio is recorded as a separate file, not imbedded in the raw video. Depending on how the raw video is processed, there may or may not be a time code reference in the video for syncing them up.

huge mistake. gives up their principal advantage over Blackmagic's horrid audio implementation. Enough to make many people pass.

There is no imbedded audio in cinema DNG since the video is a sequence of raw still frames. The frames and audio can be time coded and the video and audio files are clock synchronized to the same time base in any case, but if you use a stills processor instead of Resolve to process the video, the time code may not carry through as a reference. Just like shooting double system with a non time-code external recorder and a DSLR.

Same is true of the BMC's.
