Digi SLR

The best options you have for under 1500:

1. Get a Canon Digital Rebel XT (8 megapixels)
2. Get a Nikon D70, and splurge on a good lens or a flash (6.3 megapixels, does it really need to be 8 mp?).
3 Look on ebay for a Canon 20D (8.2 megapixels)

Get the 20D if possible. This camera rocks! The 17-85 lens is an excellent lens to look into. A good Idea though is to just go with the D70. It is about $400-500 less, and the pictures turn out perfect. I have not used the new Digi Rebel Xt, so I don't know about this camera. I understand a few people on these boards do have this camera though.

Id get the Rebel XT, its not too bulky and it shoots really good. jarred has a Rebel XT. Now if you want to save money get a disposable.

At that pricepoint, shoot for finding a good deal on the 20D. It uses the same processing chipset as the larger 1Ds line. But, if you're not needing that rugged of a body, look into the rebel xt.

Perhaps Jarred can chime in on how he's liking his new one.

It's weird how everyon seems to be wanting a digital SLR lately, this must be at least the 5th topic started on the subject in the past month, and I've been thinking about picking up a 20d as well.

SLR's rule!! Point blank!! PERIOD!! It just sounds so cool: Single Lens Reflex!! I'm so glad the industry has came around and produced great cams like the Mark 1Ds and Rebel XT. Not to mention the Nikon's and other great cams out there. They can do soo much these days and you never have to buy film again. WHY NOT!! I love mine!! ~reservoir~

Sorry to stray off topic, but what do those of you with the 20d think of the 17-85 you can get with it? It seems a bit slow, I was thinking of getting just the body, and then getting the 50mm 1.8.

i have the 50mm 1.4 and its honestly my favorite lens...i shot with it and my sigma 200 more then anything.

i uploaded some images from a 20d 50mm at 1.4...the 50 1.8 is supposed to be pretty sweet too...just a little light on the build quality, but whatever...i think the 1.8 is like 100 bucks.

I would say, go for for the
20D hands down on that price bracket.

It rocks. Great skin tones. And good enough to shoot sports events with. I've seen some 17 inch pictures printed of images taken by that camera... and I honestly couldn't tell that it was digital.

I agree with Rich on the 50mm 1.4, fantastic "goto" lens. I usually only use it, an 85mm portrait lens, or the 70-200 zoom.

Kai- that portrait lens is sweet.

Which wide angle are you guys using? I was thinking about the 28mm 1.8

as you probably already know...

28mm "wide angle" x 1.6 (zoom factor) = 44.8mm (35mm equivalent)
85mm "portrait" lens x 1.6 (zoom factor) = 136mm (35mm equivalent)

For sports and portraits, the 1.6 magnification factor can work to your advantage - closer shots, more compression between subject and background.

The new Digital Rebel XT is 8 megapixel and is damn nice also. It's $999. Maybe we can get it for 799 or 899 come holiday time!!
