I am trying to learn about gels and what each type will do. I have not been able to find much that explains the differences. Also, what would be a good set of gels for a relative beginner. I will be shooting narrative on DV, primarily.
Depending on what you have for a lightsource, and are trying to figure out what works best, I'd get a Lee gel pack, its 1'x1' sheets, of about 40 gels and diffusion gels, its about 45 bucks at filmtools.com
from there you can buy more of what you want.
I'm sure you'll get a few responses as to who likes what for a given circumstance.
I suggest you go to LEE and ROSCOE's websites, as well as get your hands on the ASC's Cinematographers guide. Color correction, setting the mood and hiding or emphasizing fleshtones, backgrounds and locations, is an art in itself.
Getting yourself some practise gels is very important. You should'nt just use gels or diffusion because someone told you, or that you read about them . Get out and use them and learn why one is better than another. Good luck on your journey. P.S. I love OPAL Frost and a gel call Straw ,I also employ 1/4 or even 1/2 cto on HMI's for fleshtones sometimes. I like it warm...But don't listen to me, get out and find what you like. Once you've mastered shooting in a factory with sodium and mercury vapor lights , hanging flourescent work lights and a bank of huge daylight windows, people will be asking you this same question..
