??diffusion/filter question??

I've been using a lowel dv creator 1 kit for a doc film, but the lights are difficult for my dp to manipulate. They kinda just throw hard light and the barn doors aren't of much use. We've been using paper diffusion sheets, but they've been melting. We tried bouncing off of walls and using cards, but it's a complete pain in the ass. Any inexpensive solutions in terms of maybe glass filters or something.
thanks

You are probably putting that diffusion way too close.
Are you diapering the lights? it sounds like that is the problem.
You might use a gel frame and get that diffusion further away from the light, or use a diffusion scrim.

Yes your surface area isn't large enough by putting it right up on the lens. The silk or a softbox really spreads the light out over a larger area. That's what really makes it less "hard."
