diffrence between FCP and FCE?

Final Cut Express is way less robust. It doesn't handle all the flavors of HD that FCP can/does (I think it might only do HDV actually, not even DVCPro HD). I don't believe it does the new Pro Res 422 codec which is proving quite popular with some folks. Last I heard it doesn't allow batch capturing and won't display our timecode. So I'm not sure you can go back out to tape with it. I believe FCP can take on way more filters (AE ones for example) and FCE can not. FCP (and well the whole suite) has all the extra juice from the additional applications like Compressor, DVD Studio Pro, Motion, and now Color. FCE also can't support third party capture cards and has no 3-way color correction (I think just a 2-way corrector). Also you can't map/customize the keyboard layout in FCE. Also FCE I believe is 29.97 only, so no 23.98 edits.

But if you're just going to be cutting, for story, 29.97 footage (DV or HDV) then I think FCE can suffice. It won't be great, but you can edit your story effectively with it. I believe that you can even take your FCE project file to FCP if need be. So if you lock picture you can take the project to an online facility and they can take your project file. But get this confirmed from the Apple web site or someone else, as I've not actually done this so won't give a gaurantee that it will work smoothly (or at all for that matter).

cheers.
