different colored bars when shooting 16:9

I was watching a music video the other day and the bars on top and bottom were a different color than black. it was like a 16:9 frame but instead of the black bars it was white. im sure this is the wrong place to post this, and considering this is my first post i just wanted to post it up. i wanted to shoot a music video and i wanted the same effect, any ideas of how its done and if its a simple effect to do???

The easiest way that comes to mind right now is to use colour mattes in post and just crop them down at the size of the bars...
 
If it's really 16:9 anamorphic footage, you've got no control over what color the bars are when displayed.

If you want to have colored bars, you'll need to lay down a background track in the color you want, then put the cropped 16:9 footage on top of it, and export the whole thing as 4:3 instead of 16:9.
