difference of quality between olympus ds71 and Tascam dr100

Two things. First we used a different Olympus mini recorder and it was very nice, solid and good user interface. However this is a 44.1/16 only recorder. All the other modes are some compressed format you really don't want to use. Well probably you don't want to use. For FX they "might" be OK. I recorded a bunch of stuff with MiniDisk (and a good preamp( and they came out mostly sounding as good as DAT so YMMV. But assume that you need to use the uncompressed mode so your stuck with 44.1 and that means you will have to convert everything.

Something that doesn't get mentioned enough is that while it's frustrating for those of us who have made some serious investment over the years in gear that every new comer seems to want to use a CrackerJack toy to record their film with. That CrackerJack toy is generally capable of making recordings that are right up there with the $15K analog recorders of not so long ago and clearly blows away the cassette decks now budget filmmakers were stuck with.

So while I can bemoan that your recording 44.1/16, I would have killed someone's mother for that capability not that many years ago.

IF you use it well it's good enough. If you use it badly it really doesn't mater what you were using.

It is MUCH more about what you do with it.

Maybe I missed something in the specs, but as near as I can tell, the Olympus doesn't have XLR inputs and phantom power for mics. That will cripple you for most serious work.

Sorry, I was thinking of the lower end Tascam.
Yes there is the issue of connecting external mics.
The DR-100 looks to be a much more suited recorder to what you want to do.

So much for THE answer...
