Difference between rendering 24p with+2-3 pull down and without

The default for rendering a 23.976 includes a 2-3 pull down. But you can change that to be a straight 23-976 with no pulldown, which opens the option for progressive, lower field first, and upper field first.

Just wondering what the difference between the two is, and since the progressive box is grayed out when you include the 2-3 pulldown, it must be progressive.

What would happen to your video if you specifically chose just the 23.97 and set it to progressive, with no pull down? Would that alter playback?

Thanks.

I assume you're referring to MPEG-2, and rendering for DVD.

If you're rendering for DVD, you need the "+ 2:3 pulldown" not because it actually addes pulldown (it doesn't), but because it adds the pulldown flags necessary for instructing the DVD player when and where to insert pulldown on the fly is it plays the DVD to a standard display.

If you render a 23.976 file without the pulldown flags and then attempt to make a DVD with it, DVD Architect will have to rerender the file in order to insert those flags to comply with the DVD spec.

But if you're not going to DVD, there's no reason to include the pulldown flags. Not sure why else you'd render an MPEG-2, though. :)
